I recently spent some time browsing through my vast quantity of saved images/drawings, DVDs/screenshots, and doujinshi in search of suitable images to share on this blog. As epic image after epic image assaulted my eyes while perusing my "breasts/awesome" subfolder, I reached this mind-blowing paizuri image of Devil, an elegant purple-themed woman from the eroge Yonniiroku (よんにいろく). As I stared at her unbelievably soft-looking bosoms, I had a pleasant epiphany in which I suddenly discovered a common visual theme of which I had not been fully self-aware until that very moment.The most concise way I can describe this theme is "mentally evoked tangibility of perceived softness." Breasts are a very common subject of this theme due to their natural ability to compress, contort, envelop, or otherwise alter their shape due to an external force such as a groping hand, a resting head, an enveloped penis, or another pair of breasts. This distortion serves to showcase not just the breasts' visual beauty but also their soft tactile splendor, making their depiction seem to extend beyond the confines of a two dimensional piece of paper (or computer screen).
To illustrate my meaning, compare the two similar images on the right of which I have purposely hid the girls' faces to maintain some degree of objectivity. The image on top showcases a pair of beautifully drawn breasts that unquestionably arouse one's visual sense. The image below it, however, goes beyond visual stimulation by also evoking a sense of soft tangibility... Not only do we see the beauty of her breasts (sense of vision), we get a feeling as to how they would react if contacted by another object (sense of touch)... Now two of our five senses are immersed in the image instead of just one. One can almost feel the same titillation and sensations as the owner of that groping hand: the softness of the breast, how it conforms to his palm, and the hardness of its nipple against his middle finger. Just like any form of entertainment (movies, books, games, etc), total immersion is of utmost importance.Here are some of my all-time favorite depictions of this "perceived softness" theme accompanied by supporting details and thoughts.

If a museum for eroge art were ever to be erected, this spectacular depiction deserves the same recognition as Da Vinci's Mona Lisa at the Louvre.
If I had to choose one word to describe this work of art, it would be "majestic". It has no fewer than five distinct visual focal points at varying image depths:
(i) The Breasts - Whereas Mitsugu's left breast hangs freely, her self-lifted right breast veils her gentle fingers, providing this drawing with a "perceived softness" quality.
(ii) The Penetration - The ultimate sexual expression is on clear display as her male partner, whose penis is still buried deep inside her, has just attained orgasm.
(iii) The Face - Lost in pleasure, Mitsugu's eyes are closed and her head is raised as she experiences the physical and mental pleasure associated with nakadashi.
(iv) The Left Arm - The stiffness in Mitsugu's left arm reveals her involuntary bodily response to her sexual release.
(v) The Hair - The wildly flowing blond hair fills-out the drawing while symbolizing the dynamic internal sensations she is experiencing... or perhaps the artist just thought it looked cool.
Mitsugu's brightly-colored body also exemplifies her internal pleasure and contrasts beautifully with the star-filled night sky setting. The artist deserves an award for an absolutely fascinating depiction of beauty and sexuality... a wonderful example of high quality art that truly transcends the confines of what some would incorrectly label as pornography.

I have always been a fan of monster-themed girls in all their various forms: nagas, lamias, medusas, harpies, mermaids, etc... This short scene from Amon: Apocalypse of Devilman features a completely nude (at least for her species) insect-girl whose character design features a face that only a mother could love but breasts that have a truly unique design. Notice that her underarms, neck, sides, and back of her lower legs have a segmented exoskeleton-ish surface structure, leading the viewer to initially assume that her breasts, which have a similar color and appearance, would lack any sort of typical softness. The contrary is quickly apparent, however, as her sudden stop causes her exposed breasts to bounce around like any other anime female's. I accredit my fondness for this short scene to the unanticipated softness of her breasts that is further confirmed when Devilman gropes and squeezes them.
Whereas an artist is usually limited to the breast's outline, shading, nipple position, and the occasional breast tattoo to portray the contortion of a breast during animated scenes of bouncing or groping, the contours of segmentation adorning this bug-girl's breasts serve as a unique sort of visual contouring wireframe. In addition to adding three-dimensionality to the breasts' appearance, these contours provide the artist with a mechanism to show exactly how her breasts contort as they bounce and are grabbed. To truly demonstrate the significance of these contours, refer to the image on the right in which I have edited them out... Note the loss of both depth and apparent softness.
WARNING: If you decide to investigate this specific scene from the OAV, I should warn you that this lovely depiction is quickly followed by a downright brutal and gory display with visuals and screams that would send a chill down even the most indomitable person's spine. Like me, some people may be disgusted by this character's horrifying and cruel fate.

How come we never see this in the series or movies?The concept of perceived softness does not have to involve a groping hand, as this sequence from an old Evangelion doujinshi demonstrates. Shinji and Rei are stationed inside the same Eva cockpit, completely nude, and fully immersed in a pool of LCL. Rei decides to take advantage of the situation and offers herself to him. Although I present pages 20 and 21 strictly for context, pages 22 and 23 are what evoke mental tangibility.
On page 22, Rei presses her chest into Shinji's (upper right panel) and then slides down his body (left panel). This sliding down motion results in two opposing forces on her breasts: upward friction from Shinji's chest, and downward pulling from Rei's body. This absolutely wondrous site evokes a clear sense of tangibility... The viewer can almost feel Rei's breasts as they slide across Shinji's skin. Even after they fall free and return to their natural state, the marvel continues... On page 23, Rei reverses the motion and slides up Shinji's body, causing a downwards deformation of her breasts that evokes the same mental response as the previous page. Although these are slightly exaggerated depictions of breast contortions, they emit a wonderful aura of soft tangibility.

During the first episode of Momiji, Shizuru and Kazuto share a long passionate encounter that culminates in this wonderful depiction of perceived softness. He held her butt softly throughout most of the encounter, but the sudden contortion of its flesh around his taut fingers as they both clench at the moment of climax helps to bring a powerful sense of soft tangibility to this great scene.

Although the female buttocks may be one of the best natural cures for insomnia, it does involve certain sudden olfactory risks.I find the situation in this Marimite fan art to be a rather wonderful combination of cuteness and humor. Kei, the black haired bespectacled girl, finds herself in a precarious position as she has allowed Sei, her brown-haired female friend, to fall asleep with her head resting comfortably on her butt with each of her hands clutching the corresponding cheek. The expression on Sei's face is downright hilarious, but Kei has a drop of sweat running down her cheek and a look of concern on her face. Is she simply embarrassed? ...or does she have a need to get up and not want to wake her comfortably sleeping friend?
